The Rest of Us Just Live Here, or (how I will refer to it) TROUJLH is a story centered around a group of friends far outside the group of "chosen" kids or nicknamed the "indie kids." The "indie kids" that always end up being the superheroes of the story that possibly get everyone else killed. Mikey Mitchell, the main character, is nowhere near being the chosen one and avoids the "indie kids" at all costs. Frustrated, he lives and overcomes his struggles with his sisters, friends, and crush Henna, all while indie kid Satchel is unfolding a mystery with a magical amulet she found.

Ness aims is to create an exciting and valuable story about the mundane, boring kids that don't need to be the chosen ones to be extraordinary. In fact, "find the extraordinary in the ordinary" is the tagline for this book.

TROUJLH is a book about mundane and boring high-schoolers, so the book is mundane and boring.
